Life Reflections

The journey of Evelyn Rose Williams was one that was filled with love for the God she served and the family she simply adored. Affectionately referred to as “Mother,” “Mama,” or “Granny Rose,” she filled a unique role in nurturing her family and extended family, as she gently urged them to pursue God’s purpose for their lives. A native of Quanah, Texas, “Evelyn” was born on July 1, 1929 to Andrew and Argrie Martin. Evelyn was educated in the Quanah Independent School District where she graduated early and was the valedictorian of her senior class in1944 from Douglas High School in Quanah, Texas.

On January 18, 1947, Evelyn married Preston Lee Rose, Sr. They were married for forty-six years until his passing in 1993. They resided in Wichita Falls, Texas and became the parents of five children, Doris, Preston Jr., Billy, Sharon and Sylvia.

In her professional life, Evelyn graduated from Bethania Nursing School in Wichita Falls, Texas and was employed in the field of nursing. Evelyn worked for over 33 years at Wichita General Hospital and Bethania Hospital. After retiring from Wichita General Hospital, Evelyn began working in a drug rehabilitation unit in Wichita Falls, Texas. Evelyn was caring in spirit, filling a unique role mentoring and nurturing those who crossed her path.

In her Christian life, Evelyn was a member of St. John Baptist Church where she devotedly served for many years. She was in various ministries at the church including the Women’s Chorus and the Ruth Mission Circle. Evelyn also served as an announcing clerk at the church. Outside of church, Evelyn was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star – Naomi Chapter Number 1310. She was active with the Isabel Smith District of Federated Colored Women’s Club – EVP Social Aide where she served as president and held many other offices, all while being a loving debutante mother.

On September 15, 2006 Evelyn married Elder Freddie R. Williams where she became the 1st Lady of Christ Tabernacle Church of God. They were married for seven years until his passing on June 8, 2011. In later years, Evelyn became a member of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California where she resided with her daughter until her passing.

Evelyn was a devoted and loving grandmother to all of her grandchildren and her favorite pastimes included sewing, cooking and playing dominoes. Whenever you sat down to play dominoes with Evelyn, you had better know the game well.

Evelyn’s journey home on Monday, June 15, 2020 can merely be seen as a new beginning. Throughout her lifetime, she had an amazingly profound impact on the lives she touched. We celebrate her passion for life! We celebrate her love for God! We celebrate being recipients of her love, wisdom, compassion, and encouragement!

Evelyn’s deep love for her family and friends was consistently expressed through her encouraging words, compassionate ways and ever-present smile. Her generosity fulfilled the admonition in Micah 6:8, “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Martin and Argrie Pyles Wallace; late husbands Preston Lee Rose, Sr. and Elder Freddie R. Williams; and grandson, Corey Evans.

Cherishing her memory are children, Doris Clark of Los Angeles, California, Preston Rose of Phoenix, Arizona, Billy Rose (Bettina) of Frankfurt, Germany, Sharon Rose of Wichita Falls, Texas and Sylvia Rose of McKinney, Texas; uncle, Wallace Pyles (101 years old) of Pueblo, Colorado; grandchildren, Eric Clark of Los Angeles, California, Ebony Rose of Tucson, Arizona, Chrissenda Rose of Wichita Falls, Texas, Gia Rose of Charlotte, North Carolina and Jasmine Rose-Nguyen (Mike) of Twentynine Palms, California; great-grandchildren, Bria Farrell of Charlotte, North Carolina; Cassie Evans of Indio, California, Brandon Curry of Wichita Falls, Texas, Cameron Bennett of Charleston, South Carolina, Raven Rose of Tucson, Arizona, Olivia Wade of Twentynine Palms, California, Remington and Eleanor Nguyen of Twentynine Palms, California; great-great-grandchildren; Aidyn Cerrasco and Anthony Cerrasco of Indio, California; nephews, cousins, extended family and wonderful friends.
