On September 8, 1942, Jerome Spann was born to William and Sarah Spann in Charleston, South Carolina. He was raised in the tight-knit Accabee community, where his early years were shaped by strong family roots and Southern traditions. At just 17, Jerome answered the call to serve and joined the United States Armed Forces, setting out on a path defined by courage, discipline, and dedication.

Jerome was one of eleven siblings, a testament to the deep familial roots that shaped his life. From an early age, he gave his life to Christ, a decision that guided his steps and anchored his faith through every season. In time, he met and married the love of his life, Ella Ruth Roberts. Together, they celebrated 51 years of marriage on October 19—a union marked by devotion, strength, and enduring love.

Through their blended family, four children were united under one roof, creating a legacy of shared memories and unconditional support. Jerome became a devoted member of the Church of the Living God, Pillar and Ground of the Truth, where he served faithfully until his passing, living out his beliefs through action and service.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, *William “Buster” and Sarah Spann; his brothers, *William “Billy” Spann, Jr. and *James Powell; his sister, *Helen Green; his cherished daughter, *Ella LaVorn Sanders; and his cherished grandson, *Simeon Shaw.

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the heavens received a cherished soul, as God’s special gift—Jerome Spann—was lovingly returned to the Sender.

His love for his grandchildren was boundless. He never missed a birthday, a school program, or an opportunity to brag about them at church. They knew Papa’s hugs could fix almost anything.

In his church family, Jerome was a pillar. His gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and dependable presence brought comfort and strength. He taught by living, by praying, by showing up—week after week, year after year.

Into God’s loving hands, he now entrusts the care of those dearest to him. His Wife, Ella Ruth Spann and children; *Ella LaVorn Sanders, Cynthia Gail Johnson, Valerie D. (James) Johnson, Jerome (Dominee) Spann Jr.; grandchildren; Elicia “Tolia” Johnson, *Simeon Shaw (Trunice), Candice Johnson, James (Rachael) Johnson Jr., Joshua Shaw, Nevia Shaw, Benjamin Shaw, Brittany (LaDerrious) Hargrave, and Ashlee Spann.

He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings, Joseph (Margaret) Spann, Annette Daniels, John (Janice ) Spann, Geneva Spann and sisters-in-law, Bertha Feaster, Alice Powell, Jeslon Mayo and LaDorris Roberts; his brothers-in-law, Phillip (Kathy) Roberts and Rickey (Melanie) Roberts; and his lifelong friend and confidant, George Brickhouse, whose bond stood the test of time.

He is survived by eighteen great-grandchildren; many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, as well as many treasured Godchildren who were blessed by his love and guidance.

From the first day I met him till the last day we spoke, Mr. Spann was more like a father to me than a father-in-law. The fondest memory I'll always have is every time we would run into someone he knew that I didn't know he would say, "this is my son-in-law, he's the best son-in-law in the world." I'll always cherish those words and Mrs. Spann treated me like a son unconditionally. Mr. Spann it's your time to rest in peace now and I pray you give God that big smile of yours when you hear those cherished words "Well done my good and faithful servant."

What a Blessing you have been to my family when I PCS to Sheppard AFB. You and your sweet wife Ella immediately may me feel like family and treated my daughters like your own granddaughters. My favorite memory of you is helping you or should I say completing your annual trainings. May God comfort your entire family during this difficult time. Love you the Davis Family (Douglas Tina Trinity Danielle ) ❤️

My Dear Papa, One of the greatest Men I have ever known. Not just your willingness to serve the Lord and your country, but your willingness to serve your family. My papa was all about his family and grand kids. He was the first to teach us to fish, and become one with the outdoors. My papa was always so concerned about me growing up with all brothers, but he would always tell the story of when I was able to hold my own when we would come to visit in the summer. I never would have imagined this day would come. He was the one who was going to out live everyone. I know God said it was time. You have lived an honorable life. I am glad I was able to see you through your last transitioning moments . He stilled remember his Lady. Papa I miss you so much you have no idea . Now you are with Sim, and we have gained another guardian Angel! You will forever be missed and forever be loved. Love you always Lady!

My pops was a great man always keeping us out in nature as I was growing up. The favorite spot was the duck pond. He loved his grand kids and great grands. He was a very caring man he would give the shirt off his back if you needed it. I got to enjoy a few of his last moments taking him out and for a walk I which he was very excited to do. I miss you and know you and Sim are looking down over us all.

Sending Condolences to Spann Family. Remembering Pops Spann, a man filled with compassion for everyone he met. I don't recall him calling anyone a stranger. Military was his way of meeting new associates. I was married into his family by way of his nephew Quinton Daniels, while station at Shepherd AFB, I was privileged to stay at Spanns home, while Quinton attended School..Day one I was welcome with open arms. Treated like a queen. Hospitality was amazing. I believe Pops liked me being there, because he missed Charleston SC, style cooking. I learned a lot from him. Texas style Luby restaurant, All types of briskets, Saying Soda pop, making groceries, rather than going groceries shopping. Different style of interpretation, with the same meaning. I attended their church, I love it. Pops was remarkable man. Dedicated to Family. God Fearing man. I will miss him teasing me. God has him in his care now. Mom Spann I love you, will be checking on you. God's strength will keep you . Your loving Niece Bonnie Daniels Charleston SC
