Margaree Larece Armstrong Rentz was born July 17, 1924 in Grambling, Louisiana to Prentice James “PJ” Armstrong and Beatrice Jenkins Armstrong, as the second of four daughters.

At an early age, Margaree accepted Christ and joined Spring Hill Baptist Church in Downsville, Louisiana. She completed her early education and then obtained her bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Grambling State University. She married the love of her life Simpson Edward Rentz in August of 1948. They later moved to Wichita Falls, TX and had two children, Gwendolyn and Prentice. They were devoted members of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Margaree was active as a Sunday School teacher, Youth Choir Sponsor, Women’s Missionary, choir member, and Baptist Training Union. She and her husband, Rev. Rentz, later started Greater Zion Baptist Church where she was a faithful first lady and served in many capacities in the church. After her husband went on to glory, Margaree returned home to Mt. Pleasant where she was an active member until she gained her wings.

Margaree began her career as an educator. She later transitioned into the banking and financial industry where she broke barriers and was the first African-American bank teller in Wichita Falls at the Old City National Bank. This was historic because the city was still segregated at the time. She helped many people in the community with financial literacy and planning. Some of her community activities were Girl Scout Leader of the Eastside Branch, chartered member of the Evelyn V. Polk (EVP) Social Club, and Progressive Club member.

Margaree was known for her elegance, grace, and a smile that brightened every room. Her inner beauty radiated as brightly as her outer beauty and to know her was to love her. She loved cooking for family and friends and no one could outdo her famous banana pudding. She also loved flowers, gardening, and enjoying God’s beautiful nature. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family and creating fond memories at annual family reunions back home in Louisiana. Margaree passed peacefully from this life and into the gates of Heaven, at the age of 98, on November 9th, 2022 with her son and daughter by her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents PJ and Beatrice Armstrong; her loving husband of 63 years Rev. Simpson E. Rentz; and her sisters, Geraldine Mims, Dorothy Williams, and Ruby Flenoy.

Loved ones left to carry on her legacy and cherish her memory are her loving and devoted daughter and caretaker, Gwendolyn (Leo) Smith and her beloved son, Prentice E. Rentz; grandchildren, LeGwenda (Aundry) Potter, Dano Smith, Shayla (William) Green; great-grandchildren, Jalen Smith, Laila Green, and Nylah Green; nephews, Foster Williams, Jr., Ronald (Jenell) Williams, Kevin (Kim) Williams, Lennoris Wilson, Anthony (Geri) Flenoy, Sr., Donald (Adonna) Flenoy, George Flenoy, Jr.; nieces, Angela Flenoy Jones, Cheryl (Kenneth) Pippins, Linda (Kevin) Johnson; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, family, and friends that loved her dearly.
